What are Dark Circles?

Dark circles under the eyes are a common issue in men and women. These are the dark circles that give you older look than your age. It is not so easy to get rid of your dark circles. Dark circles under your eyes become visible when the skin under your eyes appears to be darker.

Dark circles are not a serious issue so no need for any medical treatment. Dark circles appear because of tiredness, aging, or a shadow caused by puffy eyelids. Dark circles are because of two dermatological causes: -

  • When the skin under your eyelids becomes thin, it appears more obvious.
  •  Puffy eyes give a look of dark shadow under your eyes.

There can be several causes for dark circles. Sometimes dark circles can be because of some health problems and sometimes without any health problems.

In this article, we will discuss the dark circles under the eyes- causes & treatment.

 Causes of dark circles

Many factors may contribute to dark circles under the eyes. Some of them are as follows:-

1. Age

Aging is the main factor of dark circles beneath your eyes. Aging is a natural process and it is not under your control as is reflecting the skin symptoms of this authoritarianism.

We all know that the skin under our eyes is very thin and as we grow older it becomes thinner. With age, we also lose collagen around our eyes, and the dark circles beneath our eyes become more dark and visible.

2. Fatigue

Taking sleep more than you need, too much fatigue or lack of sleep can be the reason for dark circles under your eyes. Because of sleep disorder, your skin looks dull and pale, and the dark tissues and blood vessels under your skin become visible. Another risk factor of taking less sleep is that a fluid is built-up beneath our eyes which causes them to look puffy. And the dark circles that you observe under your eyes may be puffy eyelids.

2. Genetics

Genetics is also one of the causes of dark circles under our eyes. If your parents had dark circles you will have them. In this case, it will not bring any difference whether you take adequate sleep or proper treatment.

This hereditary characteristic can be seen in your early childhood and with the age, it may become darker or can also decrease. Some diseases such as thyroid disease can also be the cause of dark circles under your eyes.

According to research that the family history is the main factor that contributes to promoting the dark circles under the eyes and the estimated age of dark circles is 24 years old.

If we talk about genetics, our collagen level and melanin are the main productions in promoting dark circles.

  • Collagen
Collagen is the amount of protein in our body that maintains the elasticity of our skin and helps to remove wrinkles.

  • Melanin
Melanin is a dark brown or black color pigment in our skin. It is called hyperpigmentation and can be cured by a dermatologist.

3. Allergies

According to the research of Michele Green who is a cosmetic dermatologist in New York that allergies and dry eyes can cause dark circles under your eyes. During your allergic response, your body releases histamines that can be the reason for the itchiness of your eyes.

This enlarges your irritation, swelling, and appearance of dark shadows under your eyes. Allergies have a great effect on the look beneath our eyes, according to Rubin that there is a specific name for it “allergic shiners”.

According to Rubin’s explanation that the inflammation from allergic conjunctivitis causes broken blood vessels and bruising. Bruising may heal but pigmented hemosiderin remains behind which leads to dark circles under your eyes.

4. Sun exposure

Too much disclosure of your skin to the sun can be the reason to produce an excess of melanin. Melanin is a pigment that imparts your skin a color. Sun exposure especially for your eyes can be the reason for pigmentation and gives dark color beneath your eyelids.
