Causes of lack of sleep in kids
It's natural for parents to worry about the kids who are not taking proper sleep at night. Sleep deprivation has a lot of effects on kids' overall performance.
According to a study, kids who take adequate sleep can have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, mental and physical health.
Lack of sleep can affect kids' performance in school, extracurricular activities, and social performance.
There can be so many reasons for the lack of sleep in kids. Some of the causes of lack of sleep in children are as follows:
1. Caffeine in food and drinks
The cause of the lack of sleep in kids is the quantity of caffeine that children take in their daily food and drinks. Caffeine is very dangerous for kids. Children who take too much caffeine always remain irritable, fussy, and have sleep problems.
Caffeine is mostly in coffee, chocolate, cock, tea, and other soft drinks. Caffeine creates a dehydration problem in kids because it eliminates the water from kids' bodies. It also stimulates our nervous system. As good parents, we should keep the caffeine consumption of our kids under control.
2. Bedtime fears
As a good parent, it's your responsibility to understand the nature of your child's fear. During childhood, fear of the dark, monster, and anxiety are common before going to bed. Keep one thing in your mind that your reaction to your child's fear can have an impact on your child's ability to fall asleep.
Don't make fun of your child's trivial fears because sometimes these trivial fears may seem very real to your child. As a parent, develop mutual understanding with your child. In this way, he would be able to tell what makes him scared at night.
When your child tells you what makes him afraid, encourage with love that there is nothing scary. For example, if your child says that he is scared of the monster, don't encourage by saying, "Don't worry, I will not let the monster come into the bedroom." In this way, your child's imagination will become strong, and he would start imagining that the monster is a real thing. Instead, tell him that there is no existence of the monster in reality.
3. Allergies
Many types of allergies disturb the child's sleep pattern. Skin rashes, runny nose, and cough are common types of allergies in children. It is the nasal allergies that a child's nose becomes congested. That is why they breathe through their mouth, mostly it happens during sleep time.
Children become restless at night and can't take proper sleep at night. Itchy eyes, throat tightness, and trouble breathing can be because of specific food or medicine, and these allergies also disturb a child's sleep at night.
What type of allergy your child is having, you should adopt some precautions to prevent these allergies. Keep the windows, outside doors of your house closed during the pollen season. Give allergic medicines to your child at night time. It can help to improve your child's sleep pattern.
4. Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
One of the causes that disturb most children's sleep is restless leg syndrome. When your child complains about legs discomfort, this is a clear indication that he is not taking proper sleep at night. A change in a child's behavior like irritability, fatigue, and hyperactivity is because of RLS.
Conduct problems in children are also because of restless leg syndrome. As a conscious mom, you need to keep an eye on your child's diet pattern. It will be helpful to reduce the symptoms of RLS. Avoid giving caffeine and soft drinks to your child before sleep time.
Develop your child's habit of drinking plenty of water because water helps in reducing dehydration and can be helpful to reduce the symptoms of RLS.
5. Change in routine
Change in routine and repeated transactions play a vital role in disturbing a child's sleep pattern. The priority of the parents should be the bedtime routine of their kids.
As a parent, we should observe the causes of poor night sleep. Bedtime routine has considerable impacts on kids' overall growth and development, so setting the bedtime routine can help the children adjust their sleep. Irregular bedtime routine disturbs kids' school performance.
It also has very lasting impacts on kids' future life. Develop your kid's habit of taking exercise in the daytime. The sleeping room should be cold, quiet, and dark. Develop your kid's habit of sleep and get up every day at the same time.
6. Developmental milestones
Developmental milestones also create problems in children's sleep patterns. During the developmental milestones such as crawling, teething, walking, and rolling, kids remain very disturbed.
Kids' excitement in learning these new skills disturbs their sleep patterns. When our babies grow, they develop new skills, and with the development of new skills, we often observe the disruption in their sleep.
7. Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a breathing problem in kids during sleep time. This breathing problem occurs because of the blockage in the airway. Loud noising, snorting or noisy breathing during sleep is the cause. Apnea causes breathing to stops and oxygen levels in the body drop. It triggers the brain of babies to wake up to breathe.
8. Bed-Wetting
Some preschoolers are fully potty-trained wet their beds during sleep. To some extent, we can say that it is a genetic issue. If the parents used to wet their bed during childhood, likely, their kids also do the same.
There can be so many reasons for bed-wetting. Bladders of some kids do not develop enough to hold the urine the whole night so, they wet their bed.
Another reason for bed-wetting can be stress, illness, or change in routine. If your child is facing a constipation problem, he may wet the bed at night. The reason is that his bowel remains full and, it puts pressure on the bladder and causes bed-wetting.
9. Scary Stories And Cartoons
Some parents tell scary stories to their kids before sleep. They think that in this way, their child will sleep early. But keep one thing in your mind that these scary stories prove as fuel for your child's imagination and disturb their sleep that results in bed-wetting.
