What is a verb?
Verbs are the words that narrate an action, occurrence, or state of existence. Verbs also inform us what a subject is doing in a sentence. Verbs are the basic part of a sentence or a phrase and tell us what is happening. Without a verb, full thought can not be conveyed even in a simple sentence, you can not convey your message without a verb.
Verbs are called action words and describe the action taking place in a sentence. Some examples are as follows:-
- She went away.
- They love to eat pizza on Sundays.
- The dog was barking outside the house.
In these sentences "went", "eat", and "barking", is the 'action' parts of the sentences so they are called verbs.
But you can not recognize all the verbs as action verbs. For example:-
- I know about your sister.
- She thought about exams.
- She is looking sad
These are called non-action verbs. The actions that describe the state of emotion, possession, being, sense, or opinion are called non-action verbs. Other non-action verbs include love, anger, happiness, feeling, etc.

1. Action verbs
Action verbs, also named dynamic verbs. As s clear by the name action verbs identify the cation in a sentence in a physical or a mental form. An action verb explains what the subject of the sentence is performing. Common Action Verbs The English language consists of various action verbs. An action verb refers to the action of a person, animal, or any object English language consists of many action verbs.
An action verb can express something that a person, animal, or object can do.
Following are the commonly used action verbs:-

Examples of Action Verbs in Sentences
Following are the examples of action verbs in sentences.
It's not necessary that you can use only one action verb in a sentence. You can also use more than one action verb in a sentence.
- Harry is throwing the basketball.
- She accepted the invitation letter. He ran across the yard.
- She left the home and went far away.
- She yelled at her child.
- The child sat near the dog.
- On Sunday, we will swim in the swimming pool.
- My mother helped me with doing homework.
- We ate lunch then walked around the academy.
- Did you fix the problem in the mathematics exercise?
Action Verb Tenses
The thing that divides the action verbs from non-action verbs is that they are used in continuous tenses which means they have passed, present, and future tenses. See the following examples:-
Action verb:-"Eat" Present tense:-
1.I eat when I go home from school.
Past tense:
2.She ate dinner last night at eight.
Future tense:
3.We will swim tomorrow in the school.
Action verb:
play Present tense:
We play when it is pleasant outside.
Past tense:
Last week, we played cricket in the playground.
Future tense:
We will be playing cricket in the playground next month.
Action verb:
Go Present tense:
My son goes to school every day.
Past tense:
He went to school yesterday.
Future tense:
He will be going to school tomorrow.
2.TRANSITIVE VERB

A verb that requires an object to finalize itself is named a transitive verb. It is named transitive as it proceeds its action from subject to object.
For example:
- John kicks the basketball.
- She loves to read.
We don't use a preposition after a transitive verb.
Example:-
- My mother cleans the room.
In this sentence, the action indicated by the verb cleans proceeds from the doer, the mother, to some object, the room. So the verb ‘cleans’ is named a transitive verb.
3. INTRANSITIVE VERB
A verb that doesn’t require any object to finish itself, is named an intransitive verb. It does not proceed with its action from subject to the object.
For example,
- The girl laughs.
- He passed away last night.
We use prepositions after the intransitive verb.
For example:-
- We played in the school.
In this sentence, the action, school, does not proceed from the doer, we, to any object. So the verb played is named an intransitive verb.
4. REGULAR VERB
A verb that consists of past (2nd form) and past participle 93rd form) is formed by adding "d" and "ed" is named as a regular verb. A list of regular verbs is as follows:-

5. IRREGULAR VERB
If the verb is made up of other than the regular verb, we name it an irregular verb. Examples are as follows:-

6. Auxiliary (helping) verbs

Auxiliary verbs which are also named helping verbs are used to change the voice, mood, or tense of another verb. Auxiliary verbs are always used with the main verb which represents the main action.
The examples of auxiliary verbs do, does, has, have, be. Some examples of auxiliary verbs are as follows:-
- I have eaten that chicken many times before. (tense)
- That piece of chicken was eaten by me. (voice)
- Did you eat my chicken? (mood)
7. Modal auxiliary verbs
Some auxiliary verbs are connected to another verb to manifest necessity, possibility, or capability. Like other auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliary verbs are not the principal verb, but they do change their meaning to some extent. For example can, may, could, should, would, must, ought, and might.
- I could go there without any hesitation, but should I do it?
- She must be the bravest girl in the team, and might be the bravest girl in the region.
8. LINKING VERB
A verb that acts to link words together is known as a linking verb. It links the subject to a noun and an adjective to the predicate.

9. FINITE VERB
Verbs that change their form according to the subject are known as finite verbs. Finite verbs describe the time and the subject. It identifies who is performing the action and when this action is being performed.
Some examples are as follows:-
- I play cricket. / He plays cricket. / They play cricket.
- I am a teacher. / He is a teacher. / They are teachers.
10.INFINITIVE VERB
The verb that has "to" before it is known as an infinite verb. It expresses infinite action when is used at the start of the sentence.
Examples are as follows:-
- You should try to pass the exam.
- They decided to meet in the evening.
